Facts About Stockbridge
Stockbridge is a village in Hampshire,
United Kingdom. It is on the River Test, and in the Test
Valley district.
The A30 road goes through the town, which
once carried most of the traffic from London to the South
West. However, today most of the traffic uses the A303 road
to the north of Stockbridge, so much less traffic travels
through the village than did previously.
The origins of Stockbridge remain a bit
of a mystery. At some point in the past large amounts of
chalk where brought to the area apparently to strengthen
the river crossing but in the absence of any supporting
archaeology or historic writings this cannot be taken for
granted.
Stockbridge was once considered a town.
It was given the right to hold a market by 1190, and
elected two members to the unreformed House of Commons from
the 1560s. The Reform Act 1832 abolished it as a rotten
borough due to the bribing of voters.
Nearby to Stockbridge can be found
the Danbury Vineyard. The Danebury Vineyards are situated
on the old paddocks of what was once a very famous racing
yard, close to the now defunct Stockbridge racecourse.
